Diets in West Africa: Diversification, Urbanization and Nutritional Challenges
Food consumption in West Africa has undergone profound transformations in recent years, such as the decline in self-production, greater reliance on the market, the growth of processed products, and the proliferation of supply points. Drawing on a variety of data, including household surveys and studies conducted in several countries in the region, the Sahel and West Africa Club (SWAC/OECD) recently published a study that provides an update on the subject. The FARM Foundation discussed the future outlook for diets in the region with two of its authors from the Sahel and West Africa Club, Jill Bouscarat (junior policy analyst) and Alban Mas Aparisi (economist and associate researcher at the Africa in the World laboratory at Sciences Po Bordeaux).
Industrial hemp in Southern Africa, a growing sector
Industrial hemp cultivation is booming worldwide, although limited to a small area (barely 200,000 hectares). In southern Africa, it is in its infancy, with promising development prospects pending the construction of a solid value chain.
North Africa facing changes in global trade: what agricultural export strategies?
The recent rise in trade tensions on global markets, illustrated by the strengthening of tariff barriers in the United States, is a reminder of the complex challenges of a rapidly changing globalization landscape. In this unprecedented context, the FARM Foundation is continuing its regional analyses of African agricultural foreign trade, focusing on North Africa and its trade with the rest of the world. A second part will complement these analyses on trade relations with the United States and China.

La Minute FARM #1 | Élevage, cultures et fertilité des sols dans la vallée du fleuve Sénégal
La Fondation FARM s’est rendue en mission au Sénégal début juillet dans le cadre d’un projet co-financé avec l’Agence française de développement pour mieux comprendre les enjeux de fertilité des sols en Afrique de l’Ouest. Dans la vallée du fleuve Sénégal, tout près de la Mauritanie, nous avons rencontré des éleveurs, dont des jeunes filles venues se former aux pratiques d’élevage et de production végétale, sur une ferme pilote de la Laiterie du Berger.
La Minute FARM #2 | With producers in the Senegal River Delta
La Fondation FARM s’est rendue début juillet en mission au Sénégal dans le cadre d’un projet co-financé avec l’Agence française de développement pour mieux comprendre les enjeux liés à la fertilité des sols en Afrique de l’Ouest. Accompagnés de la SAED (Société nationale d’aménagement et d’exploitation des terres du delta du fleuve Sénégal), trois contraintes majeures pour les producteurs ont été identifiées :
