African Agriculture Barometer

The FARM Foundation, in partnership with Afdi and PAFO, has created a tool for African farmers' organizations to defend food sovereignty and guide agricultural policies. With this first edition of the African Agricultural Sector Barometer, they offer a source of strategic analysis to understand agricultural interdependencies and guide more equitable partnerships with Africa.

The health, geopolitical and climate crises of recent years highlighted the vulnerability of food systems, while rekindling debates around food sovereignty. Faced with this situation, organizations representing African producers expressed the need for access to reliable, up-to-date, and comparable data to guide their strategy and strengthen the continent's food sovereignty.

To meet the demand made by their partners in Africa, FARM, Afdi (French Farmers for International Development) and thePan-African Farmers' Organization (PAFO) have initiated a project to create an innovative tool for analyzing the agri-food sovereignty of African countries by sector.

Six analysis themes and visual educational tools

The analysis methodology is based on the cross-referencing of international databases (FAOSTAT, UN Comtrade, sectoral sources, bibliography, etc.) and on the production of accessible visual tools (maps, dashboards, graphs) and commented, offering a detailed and documented reading of food dependencies and agricultural dynamics.

The Barometer is structured around six themes: production, trade, consumption, investments, public policies, future challenges.

A first deliverable on the dairy sector in Africa in 2025

In 2025, Afdi, FARM and PAFO have produced an initial deliverable on the dairy sector which will be presented to economic and political stakeholders at various events, before the gradual launch, in 2026, of an interactive online platform. It will integrate other strategic sectors such as cereals, seeds, etc.
