As part of the European Sustainable Development Week, the FARM Foundation, Inter-réseaux Développement rural and the Cité du développement durable are organizing a round table on the theme of soil fertility in Africa on Monday, October 2, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Come attend this event which will take place at the Cité du développement durable (Indochina Pavilion) and which will be followed by a cocktail reception.

Presentation : At a time when food sovereignty has returned to the centre of States' concerns in a context of economic, climatic and geopolitical crises, Maintaining soil fertility in Africa is a key issue for all agricultural systems and a challenge to be taken into account in transitions family farming, in particularThese are the pillars of local and global food security and food sovereignty. But land degradation due to unsustainable practices – as well as deforestation – compromises their short-term productivity and long-term sustainability.

Organized as part of the sustainable development week, This 2-hour round table will explore the issues related to land fertility in achieving SDGs.

What assessment can we make of the current state of soil fertility in Africa?

What agricultural practices, particularly agroecological ones, can help restore and maintain it?

What solutions exist for environmentally sustainable and economically manageable soil fertilization?

Five people will speak during this round table:

  • Paul Luu, Executive Secretary of the 4p1000 initiative
  • Julie Stoll, General Delegate of Fair Trade France
  • Marc Chapon, Togo-Benin coordinator, former Mali coordinator of Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders (AVSF)
  • Matthieu Le Grix, Head of the Agriculture, Rural Development and Biodiversity division at the French Development Agency (AFD)
  • Hubert Cochet, Lecturer-researcher in Comparative Agriculture at AgroParisTech

This round table will be moderated by Olia Tayeb Cherif, head of studies at the fARM Foundation.
