AACC-Med Project: Adapting agriculture to climate change in the Mediterranean
Launched in 2024, this project called AACC-Med, lasting 3 years (2024 – 2026), is coordinated by the FARM Foundation, in partnership with the CIHEAM Montpellier, the international initiative "4 per 1000", THE Agricultural Credit of Morocco, THE Regional banks of Crédit Agricole Alpes Provence, Provence Côte d'Azur, South Mediterranean, Languedoc And Corsica,Credit Agricole Italia And the AAA Initiative.
Other structures, particularly from the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean, will join the project in the coming months.
The AACC-Med project aims to enable sector stakeholders to better understand the risks associated with climate change in the Mediterranean and to identify ways to anticipate and adapt to them, at different scales and timescales.
To do this, it relies on the creation ofspaces for dialogue between farmers, breeders, Mediterranean producers, promoting sharing of practices and common reflections on the future of Mediterranean agriculture.
The project will be carried out in 3 key phases:
- Phase 1 (2024) : consolidation of existing research and expertise on the impact of climate change, for a prospective vision climate issues.
- Phase 2 (2025) : organization of exchanges inter-banks between Mediterranean actors to share adaptation strategies and practices. Educational tools will be developed.
- Phase 3 (2026) : identification of political and financial levers to achieve the transitions identified previously, leading to recommendations discussed during a Mediterranean Forum.
Phase 1 (2024): launch of the project and publication of the white paper “The urgency of adaptation”
“The urgency of adaptation”: an educational dialogue tool to support the adaptation of Mediterranean agriculture to climate change
This work is part of phase I of the Adaptation of Agriculture to Climate Change in the Mediterranean (AACC-Med) project led by the FARM Foundation, in partnership with the CIHEAM Montpellier, the regional banks of Crédit Agricole Alps Provence, Provence Côte d'Azur, South Mediterranean, Languedoc And Corsica, THE Credit Agricole Italia, THE Agricultural Credit of Moroccothis the International Initiative “4 per 1000”.
The Mediterranean is a hotspot for climate change: It is warming 20% faster than the rest of the world. The years 2022 and 2023, marked by prolonged droughts, heat waves, heat waves and floods, illustrate this.
On the front line in the face of these threats, the Mediterranean agricultural world must quickly find the means to adapt.
These challenges transcend national borders
Mediterranean cooperation is necessary to share existing adaptation levers or create new ones, pool technological, scientific and financial resources and co-construct a Mediterranean adaptation strategy to guarantee healthy food and production methods that respect producers and the environment.
Designed as an educational tool for dialogue, this book aims to fuel discussions related to adaptation to climate change. Based on science and the experiences of stakeholders, this white paper offers a forward-looking vision to describe and assess the impact of climate risks. Contributors from various Mediterranean research institutes provide valuable insights into the case studies presented in the book.
The book also provides keys to understanding on adaptations, at different scales and timescales, from incremental to transformative. It thus allows us to draw up initial avenues of reflection on the levers to be activated to support and make these transformational adaptations achievable.
Phase 2 (2025): Inter-shore exchanges
Inter-shore exchanges: cooperating to meet Mediterranean agricultural and food challenges
After a first year marked by the publication of the White Paper "The urgency of adaptation» and the organization of unifying events, phase 2 of the project is underway: inter-bank exchanges.

3 meetings between farmers in 3 different countries: Morocco, France, Egypt
In 2025, the AACC-Med project will organize exchanges between farmers from Morocco, France and Egypt, with the support of local partners such as Fert, Fert Morocco, AMAC, ENAM, INRAE, AgriBioVar and EASD.
This part of the cross-shore exchanges and participation in these meetings are not open to the public. They are reserved for selected farmers and their local counterparts, but can be followed on our social networks. Cross-shore exchanges are only open to the public during the multi-stakeholder conferences organized at the end of each meeting (see below).
Inter-bank exchanges are:
- Farm visits to share adaptation practices already in use: crop change, diversification, soil conservation, agroecology, agroforestry, etc.
- Participatory workshops to identify levers and obstacles to adaptation particularly financial and insurance
- The co-construction of a Mediterranean agricultural adaptation strategy (capitalization, pooling, reproducibility) with all stakeholders in agricultural and food systems.
Join us and participate in public conferences in each country!
At the end of each discussion period, a multi-stakeholder conference, open to the public, is organized in each host country to:
- Restore testimonies and feedback from farm visits and workshops.
- Organize round tables bringing together farmers, technicians, decision-makers, researchers, financiers and representatives of civil society.
- Conduct a collective reflection on an adaptation strategy in the Mediterranean and co-construct avenues of action for the continuation of the project.
